A rare pair of finely hand-coloured albumen photographs of the Eton and Radley rowing crews at Henley in June 1858. 2 original CDV-sized albumen photographs, both finely hand-coloured. Near contemporary caption in pencil'Radley and Eton crews. 1858', with names and positions of crews. Both laid down to one side of an album page (wove paper) alongside 6 slightly later (1860s) b/w photographs of Oxford, plus a good early 1860s photograph of Oxford dons on the rear side. Size: (rowing photographs) each 7.5cm x 6.3cm (Oxford dons) 20.3cm x 14.4cm / (mount) 32cm x 24.5cm. Eton photo with very small indent to right edge. A highly rare and unusual pair of small hand-coloured albumen photographs of the Radley and Eton crews at Henley in June 1858. These are mounted alongside some mid-1860s albumen photographs of Oxford, with a large and nicely-toned photograph of Oxford dons on the rear of the page, c1866. Provenance: extracted by us from an 1860s album compiled by an Oxford student.
